27 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS INCLUDING THREE WOMEN ARRESTED IN TIMUR LAUT

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 2 (Bernama) — A total of 27 illegal immigrants,including three women,were arrested in an operation codenamed ‘Op Rantau’ carried out at two locations in the North-East District,here yesterday.

North-East District police chief,ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the operation,which began at 4pm,was held at the foot of Bukit Bendera and Komtar, here.

“In the operation,877 foreign nationals were checked and 27 of them including three women failed to produce valid travel documents and were found to have overstayed without permission,” he said here today.

He said those arrested,aged between 20 and 50 years old,comprised eight Myanmar men,six Bangladeshi men,five Pakistani men,four Nepalese men and one Nepalese woman,and one man and two women (who were Indonesian nationals).

Mior Faridalatrash said all of the illegal immigrants were brought to the North-East district police station for documentation process before being handed over to the Immigration Department for further action.

The case was being investigated under Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Rule 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1959/63,he said.

He said the five-hour operation was participated by 77 police personnel and assisted by the Penang Immigration Department and the Penang National Registration Department,and Royal Malaysia Police Volunteer Reserves.
